My family and I like watching Family Feud. Steve Harvey cracks us up, and he wouldn’t be nearly as funny without the families teeing him up with their crazy answers.
Last night, we’re watching fast money. Contestant #1 comes up. The question is: Name an animal that swims. The contestant says, “Fish.” I shout, “good answer”! Survey says: 16. Contestant number two’s turn….Name an animal that swims. She says, “Dog!” I shout, “What?” Survey says: 20.
Steve Harvey then says, “Dog was the number one answer.” I’m baffled not only by dog beating fish but what the heck did the other 64 people answer?
The link to you coaching and you as a leader is this: Not everyone sees things the same way as you. While the answer “fish” was crystal clear to me, it wasn’t even the #1 answer. Imagine when the question isn’t so easy. You will find your coaching mindset leads with what experiences you have, what you know, and what you’re passionate about. The next time an answer seems so obvious to you, but others aren’t seeing it the same way, they’re thinking “dog” while you’re thinking “fish” and take time to ask a question as to what is making them see it that way.
